Hand replayer: how to review a hand street by street

Hand replay is one of the most efficient ways to study poker because it forces you to go back in time. Instead of looking at the result and inventing an explanation, you relive the decision with the information available at that moment.

The objective is simple: to understand when the hand left the track.

Start by hiding the result

If possible, review without watching the showdown. Result contaminates analysis. A lost hand may have been well played. A winning hand may have been spew.

Before seeing the villain's letters, answer:

what was my range?
what was his probable range?
did I have a position?
what was the effective stack?
Was the bet I made/paid for a reason?

Pre-flop: range and stack

At the pre-flop, the replay should answer:

does my hand fit into this range from this position?
did the stack allow raise/fold?
was it a push/fold spot?
was there ICM, bounty or satellite?
was the sizing good?

Many post-flop mistakes are born pre-flop. Bad call out of position becomes a difficult decision later.

Flop: board texture

In the flop, look at the texture:

dry or connected?
rainbow or with flush draw?
loud or low?
does it favor the pre-flop aggressor or the defender?

An automatic c-bet on bad board is classic leak. A check with strong range can also lose value.

Turn: did the letter change the story?

The turn is where many players get lost. The card can:

complete draw;
open draw;
pair the board;
favor your range;
favor the range of the villain;
turn value into bluff catcher.

Don't click "bet" just because you bet flop. Ask if the card improves your story.

River: value, bluff or showdown?

In river there are no more cards coming. The decision is value, bluff, call or fold.

Useful questions:

do worse hands call my bet?
better hands fold for my bluff?
do I block the value?
do I block lies?
what does the size of the bet represent?

How to note a hand

Use short notes:

"Pre-flop: call out of bad position"
"Flop: small c-bet ok"
"Turn: bad barrel, card favors BB"
"River: call out of curiosity"
