Most people don't improve at poker not because of a lack of talent - it's because they study wrong or don't study at all. The good news: 30 minutes a day, with a method, beat hours of focused study. Here's a routine that works.
Why 30 minutes are enough
Consistency > intensity. Studying 30 min every day creates habit and retention. Marathoning 4 hours once a week is tiring and fades away. Think about the gym: little and always wins a lot and rarely.
The routine (30 min)
1. Review (10 min) — open 1 recent tournament and look at the big pots you missed. Ask "why?". Note 1 pattern.
2. Training (15 min) — train the spot that appears most to you. If you play MTT, push/fold is the best cost-benefit (repeated decision). Focus on difficult decisions (the margins), which is where the money leaks out.
3. Day goal (5 min) — define 1 adjustment for the next session ("PFR of at least 20%", "stop calling 3-bets out of position"). Small and specific.
Create a system, not willpower
- Same time every day (before or after playing).
- Checklist to not think "what do I study today?".
- Follow the evolution (your score, PFR, study streak) — seeing progress is a good thing.
Common mistakes when studying
- Study only theory and never the actual game.
- Want to learn everything at once (choose 1 topic per week).
- Do not train repeated decision-making (knowing ≠ executing automatically).
